North Penn Water Authority Encourages Customers to “Refill from the Tap”

In an effort to encourage Environmental Stewardship, NPWA is providing customers with reusable, stainless steel insulated water bottles

Lansdale, Pa- July 16, 2015—In its commitment to Environmental Stewardship, North Penn Water Authority (NPWA) has launched Refill From The Tap, an environmentally-conscious campaign encouraging NPWA customers to use a double-walled, stainless steel insulated water bottle, compliments of NPWA, to refill from the tap instead of buying one-time use plastic water bottles. In celebration of its 50th Anniversary, the Authority will be providing water bottles to any customer who wants one at their Operations Center, 300 Forty Foot Road, Towamencin.  They will also be distributed at the Authority’s 50th Anniversary Open House event on September 10, 2015, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and at local community events.  For a list of community events, go to www.npwa.org.

“In honor of our 50th Anniversary, we are happy to provide our customers with a simple way to help our environment and encourage them to Refill from the Tap with NPWA tap water,” said Anthony J. Bellitto, Jr., P.E., executive director, North Penn Water Authority. “Not only do we want to ensure that our valuable resources are protected for generations to come, we know it can also help our customers save money. NPWA tap water costs our customers only one cent per two gallons, making our water the best bargain in town.”

Refilling from the Tap can help protect our environment. Only one in six plastic water bottles is recycled in the U.S.  Once in a landfill, a bottle can take up to 500 years or more to disintegrate. There are many reasons for pollution, but small, simple steps can make an impact. Today, bottled water is the second most popular commercial beverage in the United States and while over 750 million people in the world still lack safe tap water, this is definitely not the case for North Penn Water Authority customers.

Refilling from the tap can also save customers a lot of money.  In the U.S., a typical 16 oz. water bottle costs about $1 while NPWA tap water costs about one penny for 2 gallons making bottled water up to 2,000 times more expensive than NPWA tap water.

North Penn Water Authority’s commitment to Environmental Stewardship branches far beyond Refill from the Tap and is driven by sustainable practices that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.  NPWA supports local watershed groups in their efforts to protect water resources and teaches the community and area students about good water practices.  Proactive maintenance and care of the water system to prevent water waste along with these other efforts all contribute to this goal.
